WEST MIDLANDS POLICE GREAT WAR MEMORIAL SITE
LAWRENCE KENNY
Lawrence
Kenny was born in St Giles, London in 1882. He joined Birmingham City
Police on 12th June 1909, with warrant number 8115, and in 1911 was living at
Aston Manor Police Station. In June 1912 Lawrence was disciplined, perhaps
unfairly as he resigned from the police shortly after. When war broke out
Lawrence rejoined the force on 12th August 1914 as a 32 year old. He served on
the ‘D’ Division with warrant number 8522 and collar number D40. At the
end of January 1915 Lawrence, along with several colleagues, underwent a horse
riding test, which he clearly passed as he then resigned on 9th February 1915 to
join the Military Mounted Police as a Lance Corporal.
He served on the Middle Eastern theatre but caught enteric fever and died at
No17 General Hospital in Alexandria, Egypt, on 9th August 1915 and was buried at
Alexandria (Chatby) Military and War Cemetery.
