JOHN GEORGE ELMS

HENRY OLIVER ENGLAND                                                                                                                                               FULL REPORT
Henry was born in August 1887 in Olton, Warwickshire.  He married Nellie Vesta Collidge in 1911 and they resided at 16 Aston Brook Street, Birmingham.  It would appear they had six children, Maurice, born 1913, Sydney born 1915, Kathleen born 1918, Florence born 1920, Thomas born 1922 and Harry born 1924.
In 1912 Henry joined Birmingham City Police and was posted to the D Division collar number PC D 188. His occupation on joining was a gardener.   On 23 April 1918, two days after the birth of his daughter, Kathleen, Henry resigned to join the 1st Btn Somerset Light Infantry, perhaps driven by the crisis of the German Spring Offensive, but 'obliged' to wait until his wife had given birth!
Henry served for ten months, until he was discharged in February 1919 and rejoined the police with warrant number 8857.  He
remained in the police until 1937, aged 50.  Henry died in 1947.
